Project Atlanta

Project Atlanta part 2–Installation

Following on from last post I thought I had better fire up Atlanta to see what it cold find out about my demon environment. I made this screencast as I installed and configured it ..

It only took a few minutes to get to the stage where I had two servers, one (Oxford-DC, a server with no SQL Server on ) as the gateway and my BI demo (BI 2010) environment with just the agent on ..

image_thumb[5]

By default, the data then gets fed into Atlanta from my environment every day (which can be changed) so I need to leave it overnight to see what advice and warnings I get from the service, and so my next post will cover that.

The help online is extensive, but here’s a few things I noticed to get you started..

  • Both the gateway and agent service on each computer will write out to the application log. For the Gateway 1100 means all is well (see the gateway trouble shooting guide) and for the agent success is 1000 (see the agent trouble shooting guide).
  • The configuration guide shows you how to tweak the registry settings in the agent and gateway to control how often data is uploaded to Atlanta and when. I imagine this will be sharpened up for release.
  • Project Atlanta works on all editions of SQL Server 2008 and later

SQL Server Reporting Services

Getting Started with SharePoint and SQL Server Reporting Services – a guest post by Jess Meats

One of the capabilities of SQL Server is the ability to create and publish rich reports on your data. One of the capabilities of SharePoint Server is the ability to store, manage and provide a portal to documents. Those documents could be your reports. So you have one system letting you create reports and the other letting you share them afterwards, delivering your data into the hands of the users who need it. In theory, this should mean that your users should be able to find the data they need in existing reports, be sure they’re looking at the most recent information and not request new reports when the data already exists in others. I say in theory because I have less faith in users doing this than I have in the capabilities of the software to deliver this functionality.

In order to get to this situation, you need to do some configuration on both sides. This article on TechNet describes the steps clearly to get the initial configuration working. One of the main steps is that you need to install the Reporting Services add-in for SharePoint 2010, which includes the admin screens for Reporting Services inside SharePoint.

Once you’ve done your configuration, you can give people the ability to view reports through SharePoint. This is done using the SQL Server Reporting Services Report Viewer web part – quite a mouthful! This allows you to point to a specific report on your SQL Server and display it through the browser.

To add this web part, go into edit mode in SharePoint, by going to the Page tab of the ribbon in the SharePoint site in question and clicking the Edit button. As with adding any other web part, you can go to the Insert tab that appears in the ribbon and clicking on the Web Part button. When the integrated mode is set up, the Miscellaneous folder in the menu includes the option for the Report Viewer web part. This inserts the web part, but it starts off blank. So do you connect it to a specific report?

You configure this by opening the tool pane. In the tool pane, you have the option to browse through SharePoint libraries to find reports that have been published. So now you can display SSRS reports in a SharePoint page, perhaps showing team reports in a team site or as part of a dashboard alongside other BI elements.

So now you can combine the rich power of Report Builder Reports with all the other capabilities that SharePoint provides.

API to Protect

Use the Exchange Backup API to Protect Your Databases

http://blogs.technet.com/blogfiles/andrew/WindowsLiveWriter/SQLServer2008TransparentDataEncryption_D37D/keys_thumb.jpg
It isn't hard to complete either one of these backups, especially if you are using an Exchange backup API. When you complete an online backup of all your databases, it can easily be done when using the NTBackup. However, if you are using a third-party backup program, you will have to get the Exchange agent to backup the Exchange. Simply stated, the agent will hook the utility up to the API and start copying files.
Restoring files is just as easy. The main difference between backing up and restoring is the database will have to be offline. It won't take very long, especially if you know what you want restored. Then you push restore and the files or database will start appearing. The time it takes will depend on how big of files you are trying to recover.
An offline backup takes a little more work, as you have to dismount the database and copy the files to a different location. If you don't have to dismount the database, you won't need the saved log files. However, if something has crashed, then you will need to get into your storage group and find the files.
Using the Exchange backup API will help protect your database, and if you need items restored, it is easy to pull them up.

Best LG G-Slate

Best LG G-Slate case and accessories

Best LG G-Slate case and accessories If you are wondering what the best LG G-Slate case or accessories are available, then you are not alone. Many owners of the G-Slate or Optimus Pad see a myriad of accessories for the device and wonder which are the best. The G-Slate already has a lot of features from its unique dual 3D cameras, an 8.9 inch display to its dual core processors. Adding a few accessories can make you device more durable, always powered and look unique.
Case

Many people use a case or cover with their LG G-Slate to change its look or make a statement. But the main reason to use these accessories is to protect your device. The best styles of cases for the Slate are either covers or glove cases. Covers are patterned after the classic book covers which guard the back of the book and add a flap to shield the front. These covers are often made from leather or plastic and do a great job at protecting the LG tablet from scratches. There is often extra padding or secured areas to also help cushion the device from an accidental fall. The front flap can also have pockets to hold on to card or pen.

Though the cover style of cases is very popular, some G-Slate owners prefer a glove case. Glove cases cover the back and sides of the tablet but leave the display exposed. These cases are much lighter and less bulky than covers but they also provide less protection from a drop. They do however provide great shielding for the Slate from scratches or other minor abrasions that would normally blemish the tablet. Glove cases come in many different colors and style, so you can easily change the look of your device to suit your tastes.
Screen protector

Best LG G-Slate case and accessories The front of the LG G-Slate is dominated by its 8.9 inch display. This touch display is large enough to easily be used to read books or surf the internet. It is also used to input data through a virtual keyboard. Through this everyday use, it the screen can easily be damaged. If you want to keep the LG’s display clear, it is a good idea to use a screen protector. Screen protectors are thin sheets of clear plastic that lay right on the display to shield it from scratches or blemishes.
Charger

Charging and syncing of the G-Slate is done through the microUSB port. Having an extra LG G-Slate charger you can keep at work or school can make it easier to keep your device charged up during the day. A spare microUSB sync cable will also allow you to transfer data from your device to a computer where ever you go.
3D glasses

The G-Slate has the ability to display 3D video and pictures if you use a set of 3D glasses. 3D glasses have been available for some time, but only recently have they started to be used outside of movie theaters. A set of stylish and durable 3D glasses can make viewing the 3D effect much easier as well as make you look less conspicuous.
Keyboard

Android has a nice set of virtual keyboards, but there is nothing like a physical keyboard if you really want to do a lot of text input. The best options for the G-Slate are Bluetooth keyboards which can easily pair with the device. You can select from a full sized keyboard if you want the full touch typing experience. On the other hand, a portable keyboard is a great way to be able to compose a book on the go. The best option is to look at a LG G-Slate case that has a built in keyboard to give you both protection and comfortable typing.

HTC Aria arrives on AT&T June 20th for $129

AT&T customers will get their first taste of an Android 2.1 device when the HTC Aria goes on sale later this month. This mid-range Android phone features almost identical insides of recent HTC phones like the Legend and Slide mixed with the design of their Windows-powered HD Mini.

The Aria is powered by the 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 (which holds up well in GPU benchmarks), includes a 3.2 inch HVGA capacitive display, and features a 5 megapixel camera. HTC’s Sense UI is layered on top of Android 2.1 and we expect the phone will be updated to Android 2.2 later this year.

Customers can purchase the Aria on June 20th for $129.99 with 2-yr contract (after $100 mail in rebate). The phone requires a data plan of which AT&T now provides two options – $15 for 200 MB or $25 for 2 GB.

This marks only the 2nd Android phone for AT&T (first was the Backflip), but the carrier plans to expand its Android portfolio to include other Android smartphones during the second half of 2010.

Highlights of the HTC Aria include:

  • Qualcomm MSM7227 processor at 600MHz

HTC Android 2.2

HTC starts rolling out Android 2.2 update for the HTC Aria

HTC starts rolling out Android 2.2 update for the HTC Aria

In an effort to keep their Android handsets up to date, HTC has started pushing out Android 2.2 to the HTC Aria. While this may sound like good news, those of you with an AT&T branded HTC Aria will most likely be disappointed to hear that this update is currently only available in Southeast Asia. We’re not entirely sure why U.S. customers have been left in the cold, but there have been rumors floating around that AT&T’s Android update testing process takes quite a bit longer than it should.

Android 2.2 should give the HTC Aria a pretty significant performance boost and enable features like live wallpapers, data tethering, and apps to SD. Hopefully AT&T and HTC will be able to sort things out pretty quickly and bring Android 2.2 to U.S. Aria users as quickly as possible. It would be nice if the update came to U.S. shores before the end of the year, but a more realistic timeframe would probably be mid to late January. Place your bets! When do you think the AT&T HTC Aria will be getting a fresh serving of Froyo?

Motorola Xoom

The Motorola Xoom is a stunning tablet with impressive hardware and software.

http://androidandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Motorola_XOOM.jpg

The latest tablet device to enter the market place comes from Motorola in the shape of the new Xoom. Boasting a great quality large screen and revamped Android OS, this looks set to be the model to grab the headlines over the coming months.
Last years best selling tablet was the excellent Samsung Galaxy Tab, however this latest offering hold two big advantages over this model. Firstly with regards to size, the Xoom sports a 10.1 inch display which eclipses the Tab and even outshines the famous iPad. Some may argue that this makes the unit less portable, but in all honestly it is an acceptable trade off for the glorious images it displays, especially with the brilliant new OS. With a screen of this size, it is vital that resolution is equally as impressive, so the 1280 x 800 pixels that is on offer here is pleasing. The capacitive display offers a great responsiveness. The other huge bonus over the Samsung model is that the Xoom is the first model to sport Android 3.0 honeycomb, the OS that offers all of the benefit we know and love about Android, but customized for the bing screen experience. Icons look crisp and clear, and you have the option to drop and drag applications into your own folders, which looks great when the are displayed on an iTunes-esque carousel. Even some of the programs have been tweaked to accommodate 3.0. YouTube clips are displayed in a similar manner and the always impressive Google maps features 3D outlines of buildings.
The Motorola Xoom incorporates a high quality processor that is not only well equipped in terms of size, but also sports dual core properties that make it perfect for handling the multitasking facilities that are on offer here. Applications load in an instant and even performing the most simple task such as scrolling through your homescreen is satisfyingly instant. The 1Ghz chip is accompanied by 1GB of RAM memory along with a built in total storage capacity of 32GB which should prove ample for most users. Should you require extra, then the micro SD card slot enables you to double up this amount. A vital aspect with tablet devices is web connectivity, as in all fairness this is the reason many users opt for such a device. The Xoom has WiFi fitted which supports all three current recognised speeds, however should you not have access to such a network, you can still utilise the excellent 3G network.
The Motorola Xoom is the most visually stunning tablet to dateBusiness Management Articles, backed up by impressive hardware and software.

Even before I got my degree in Aero/Astro Engineering, I've been interested in aviation. Ironically, I now provide computer support for rocket scientists ... literally! ;-) I've seen quite a few flying machines - many in person including the Concorde and Space Shuttle - liftoff and landing on the later. But one I have yet to see is the Airbus A380 which had its first flight on April 27th, 2005. This is now the largest passenger airplane - bigger than the 747 and C-5. I don't think the Airbus A380 will be coming to DIA anytime soon (although the AN-225 comes occasionally to haul rocket stuff), so I'll probably have to catch it at the handful of airports that it will fly out of. While I'm waiting for that photo op, here's a few pictures of it along with some other aviation pictures that I've taken.

The Airbus A380 is somewhat unique as it is a double-decker all the way back - think of a 747 with the upper deck extended. When that airplane was introduced back in the early 70's, cocktail lounges and even piano bars were on-board, but these soon went away for economic reasons - my guess is the same will happen with the A380. Except for the size (which presents some ground handling challenges), there's nothing that "new" about the airplane - doesn't fly any higher, faster, or farther than airplanes that are out there now.

BTW, Boeing has an opposite point of view than Airbus of the commercial airline market, believing that smaller long-range planes for more point to point service are desired, rather than large planes between hubs. For example, the 707 and then the 747 used to be the main mode of transportation across the Atlantic between major hubs such as New York, Paris, and London. But now, smaller twin-engine aircraft make up the vast majority of traffic, going between smaller city pairs. This fragementation has started occurring in the Pacific also - hey, wouldn't you rather take the non-stop flight?!? ;-) Having said that, it seems to me there will be a place for the Airbus A380 in high density markets and as a niche player - for instance, Virgin Atlantic says they'll put a casino on board.

Should be interesting to see what happens and I'm sure one of these years, I'll get to see (and ride) in the Airbus A380. And while a lot smaller than the Airbus A380, the Blue Angels are a pretty nifty airplane to look at too!

Stability Control Systems

Stability Control Systems

Some safety experts rate Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as the most important vehicle safety innovation since the introduction of seat belts.

Mercedes-Benz introduced ESC as standard equipment in 1999 and found that stability control equipped vehicles were involved in 42% fewer driver error related crashes than vehicles that did not have the system. Recent research by Monash University has shown similar significant reductions in single vehicle crashes.

ESC systems very effectively control understeer and oversteer by sensing the vehicle’s attitude and altering engine power and brake application to correct it when necessary.

Electronic Stability Program ESP ®

Electronic Stability Program car

Components of the Electronic Stability Program ESP ® from Bosch

  1. ESP-Hydraulic unit with integrated ECU
  2. Wheel speed sensors
  3. Steering angle sensor
  4. Yaw rate sensor with integrated acceleration sensor
  5. Engine-management ECU for communication

To do this wheel speed sensors provide information about the vehicle’s speed and acceleration, steering input and G-forces acting on the vehicle. The vehicle’s rotation around its perpendicular axis and its lateral and longitudinal deceleration is also measured.

By analysing these inputs the system’s computer can calculate the appropriate curve or line the vehicle should be travelling along. Some manufacturers call this the “Target Yaw Rate”.

By comparing the vehicle’s actual yaw rate to the target yaw rate the computer can identify to what degree it is understeering or oversteering, and what corrective action, if any, is needed. Corrective action can involve reducing engine power and applying the brake on one or more wheels to realign the vehicle.

Current stability systems work hand-in-hand with the vehicle’s Antilock Braking System (ABS) and in fact the two systems usually share wheel speed sensors and other hardware, while the ABS unit is used to apply the brakes as required.

Different systems have differing thresholds of intervention and vehicle manufacturers tailor the stability control system’s operating characteristics to match the vehicle’s desired handling characteristics. Some systems are switchable so the driver can choose if assistance is wanted.

Stability control is a worthwhile feature and is likely to become a mandatory safety feature on all new vehicles in the near future.

Note that the preceding explanation is a general overview of the topic. Different vehicle manufacturers have different terms for components and their operation and may achieve the desired outcome in slightly different ways. There are also various names for the systems. Vehicle Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Enhancement, Dynamic Stability Control, Active Stability Control, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Vehicle Stability Assist and Electronic Stability Control are some.

Electronic Stability

Electronic Stability Control

http://www.e-transport.ro/_files/newscustom/Electronic%20Stability%20Control.jpg
Many accidents are at least partially caused because the driver loses control of the vehicle. This can happen for many reasons: poor judgement on the part of the driver (for example too high a speed for a curve or corner), a sudden manoeuvre to avoid a hazard, or a slippery road surface. In such circumstances the vehicle often exceeds the limit of traction which the tyres have with the road and the car skids. Either it cannot turn quickly enough (under-steer) or it turns too quickly and spins (over-steer). Once the driver has lost control, it is very difficult to manoeuvre the vehicle safely, which often leads to an accident. Avoiding such loss of control, or correcting it once it has started, can help to avoid an accident.

The Electronic Stability Control detects the deviation between the vehicle's trajectory and the intended direction. Without any action on the part of the driver, small amounts of braking are applied separately to each wheel and this can bring the vehicle back to the intended course. The driver maintains control of the vehicle and often does not even notice that the Stability Control system has intervened.

First used in 1995, the system, which is based on ABS, had a penetration rate of 40% in new cars in 2005.

Anti-lock Braking

The Anti-lock Braking System

http://sundevilauto.com/images/diagrams/abs-brakes.jpg

The Anti-lock Braking System prevents the wheels from locking up by automatically modulating the brake pressure when the driver brakes hard. In slippery conditions with low friction between the road surface and the tyre, the wheels easily lock, making it impossible to control the vehicle. By preventing the wheels from locking, the system enables the driver to maintain steering control and to stop in the shortest possible distance under most conditions.

The system detects sudden decelerations in the spinning of each wheel, and reduces the pressure on that brake until it again detects acceleration. It can do this very quickly, before the tyre can actually significantly change speed. The result is that the tyre slows down at the same rate as the vehicle, with the brakes keeping the tyres very near the point at which they will start to lock up. This gives the system maximum braking power.

ABS was first used in cars in 1970. In 2006, 91% of new vehicles were equipped, and the penetration rate was 66% in the whole vehicle park in Europe.

diagnose for STDs

Mobile phones may soon diagnose for STDs

(NaturalNews) Young people already use their mobile phones to share their most personal details with those in their social circles, but a new project out of the U.K could take cell phone "intimacy" to a whole new level. According to a recent Guardian report, researchers are in the process of developing a new technology that allows users to put a urine or saliva sample on a small chip and insert it into their mobile phone to test for sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs).

It may sound like a joke -- and a highly unsanitary one at that -- but it is quite real. A six-and-a-half million dollar research project that is part of the U.K. Clinical Research Collaboration is working on creating the device right now as a way to encourage young people who are otherwise too scared or intimidated to go to a doctor, to get tested for STDs if they think they might have one.

"Your mobile phone can be your mobile doctor," explained Dr. Tariq Sadiq, senior lecturer and consultant physician in sexual health and HIV at St. George's, University of London, and lead of the project. "It diagnoses whether you've got one of a range of STIs (sexually-transmitted infections), such as chlamydia or gonorrhea and tells you where to go next to get treatment."

Interestingly, the technology has the potential to be an even more embarrassing invasion of privacy than seeing a doctor would be, since the results of the tests are tied directly back to the owner of the phone. And what happens to those results after they are determined is unclear from the report.

Also, researchers did not address the negative ramifications of putting potentially-contaminated bodily fluids into mobile devices that are handled by more than just personal users.

Nokia cycle charger

Nokia to launch mobile cycle charger for Rs 1,499

http://buzzever.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/nokia-bicycle.jpg

THE HASSLES of carrying a battery charger with a mobile phone might soon be over as mobile manufacturing giant Nokia has come up with a charging device which can be used to charge batteries during the early morning cycling routine. With the help of this charger which can be mounted on a cycle, the users can also entertain themselves by listening to songs without losing their battery count.

Although the announcement was made last year, the product is expected to hit the Indian markets by March 2011. Priced at a meagre Rs 1,499, the charger works on the principle of tried and tested dynamo based mechanism that has been the de-facto standard for bicycle lights. The charger being a regular charger draws power from the rotating sidewall of the front wheel.

If for instance, the cyclist cycles for 10 minutes at a speed ranging from 6 kmph and 50 kmph, the user will be able to use the phone for 28 minutes. The charger interface also comes with charging point, phone holder and bottle dynamo. A sales representative at Nokia said that the device is targeted at markets like India, and is bound to do excellently well.

The company plans to bring Bicycle accessories including the dynamo charger, by the end of February, latest by March this year.

Other features of the Nokia mobile cycle charger

- Free and Efficient Charging from Bicycling

- Starts and stops charging when bicycle speed is 6 km/h and 50 km/h, respectively

- Reaches efficiency of a normal charger, e.g. corresponds to Nokia Compact Charger AC-3 when speed is 12 km/h

- Total charging time varies between devices

- Install and detach easily with cable ties, nuts and bolts in the sales box

- Blaster music from the mobile phone while bicycling and charging

- Check charging status from the screen of the mobile phone

- Nokia Bicycle Charger DC-14 resists humidity and dust with double insulation

- A bag protects mobile phone from humidity

Inadvertent

“Inadvertent” incest detection?

Ruchira and Randall Parker point me to a new story about routine genomics screens detecting first degree incest:

Beaudet wrote in the letter that “clinicians uncovering a likely incestuous relationship may be legally required to report it to child protection services and, potentially, law enforcement officials” since the pregnancy might have occurred “in the setting of sexual abuse.”

The letter was prompted by a Baylor laboratory’s discoveries that developmental disorders in a number of pediatric patients were caused by incestuous relations not previously disclosed to doctors.

The testing is done to find the disorder’s genetic basis, typically involving mutations, deletions or duplications. But large blocks of identical DNA are evidence the child’s parentage involved first-degree relatives.

If you’re curious if you are the product of incest, David Pike’s runs of homozygosity (ROH) detector (Mozilla only) might be useful if you have a genotype file. Sometimes I wonder if mass technology is going to come to fruition far earlier than it takes to write up editorials and publish them.

Of course even people who are not the product of first-degree incest can have very long ROH. Look at Zack (though is in part a legacy of the consanguineous marriage practices common in his parents’ community). And there will be many people who are going to get their siblings typed (as I did), so amongst the intelligent set cuckoldry, rare as it is, will be exposed.
